Cultural competence in the workplace is a vital part of the shared working environment.
It’s widely known that ILM has played a key role in 7 of the top 10 worldwide box office hits of all time and has contributed to 25 of the top 50, achieving incredible developmental scope and excellence over many, many years. As with any progression, it takes time and dedication, and at its heart, a recognition that the journey is as important as the destination.
Today, cultural competence in the workplace is a vital part of the shared working environment. It, too, is a continually evolving process, that aims to create a shared understanding and sensitivity to the issues Australia’s First Nations people experience, recognition, appreciation, understanding and acceptance of cultural differences in the workplace, and a strengthening of the company as a whole.
In partnership with leading Aboriginal education specialists, Wingaru Education, ILM has committed to a cultural awareness program designed to investigate your social environment, develop trust and awareness of its diversity, and develop understanding and sensitivity to the issues Australia’s First Nations people experience.

Hosted by Dharug Elders, Aunty Tricia Wallace and Aunty Leanne King, this Introduction to Cultural Awareness focuses on Aboriginal history and culture and includes consideration of cultural understanding, colonisation, the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights, and being a good ally.
These sessions are the beginning of a cultural awareness journey, and form part of a broader program of activities that dive deeper into this field of understanding over the next 12 months.
About the Training

Session 1
Understanding Aboriginal Culture and the Impact of Colonisation
Our “Understanding Culture” session talks about traditional lifestyles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as well as introducing key understanding about modern Aboriginal culture and the impact of colonisation.
The session explores: traditional lifestyles; kinship; ceremony; the Dreaming; missions, reserves and restrictions placed on Aboriginal people; racism and discrimination; Stolen Generation; loss of culture and trauma.
Session 2
Getting Up, Standing Up and Showing Up - The Road to Change
First Nations people have a long history of standing up and fighting for rights. This session talks about some of the key movements that have been led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to bring about change and how we can all work to continue driving change.
We yarn about key drivers of change including the Yirrkala Bark Petition; the NSW Freedom Ride; the 1967 Referendum; and the establishment of the Tent Embassy. We also talk about a range of government led initiatives including the Bringing them Home Report; The Apology and the Close the Gap initiative.
The second part of this session focuses on ways of working that support strong connections with First Nations communities and protocols that encourage increased engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within your organisation.
Reflection Session
An optional session to reflect on your learning journey.
This casual drop in session provides participants an opportunity to reflect on their training experience and connect with the facilitators to further explore content.

Aunty Tricia Wallace
Aunty Tricia has over 30 years of experience delivering services and programs to Aboriginal communities, and over 20 years’ experience hosting cultural awareness training to both government and non-government organisations. She holds a Bachelor of Education majoring in Aboriginal Studies; a Diploma in Community Servicing; a Diploma in Aboriginal Mentoring; and Certificate III in Workplace Training and Assessment.

Aunty Leanne King
Aunty Leanne is a Dharug woman from the Boorooberongal clan, with qualifications in education and Indigenous social policy. A passionate educator, Leanne has spent over 30 years teaching in the Aboriginal education space, including as a senior lecturer at a number of Australian universities and increasingly focuses her time sharing stories on Country.

Aunty Cynthia O’Brien-Younie
Aunty Cynthia O’Brien-Younie is a Dunghutti woman from the Mid North Coast of NSW. Cynthia is a qualified facilitator with over 30 years of experience across the private and public service. Her qualifications include: Diploma in Aboriginal Mentoring; Diploma Aboriginal and Community Services; Certificate in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Competence; and Certificate III in Workplace Training and Assessment.
